Introduction:
Government Public Library Prayagraj, earlier known as Allahabad Public Library, is situated at Prayagraj, a historical and holy city of Uttar Pradesh. The government of north-western provinces established this library in 1864 with the approval of the Governor. Lt Governor Sir William Muir was laid the foundation stone of the present library building in the Alfred Park (Now known as Chandra Shekhar Azad Park). The beautiful library building is an architectural marvel of the eighteenth century and a magnificent example of Gothic/Scottish sculpture. R Roskell Bayne was the architect of this library building. The first sitting of “Legislative council of the north-western provinces of Awadh” was held on the main hall of this building on January 08, 1887. It has been a sacred place of intellectual activities since its very inception. This is apex 5th category only Public Library of Uttar Pradesh with maximum number of collection and readership. This is one of the oldest and biggest public library of India. The library is one of the world’s magnificent repositories of cultural heritage and treasure-house of knowledge. The library is giving positive thrust to book and reading culture irrespective of age, race, sex, religion, nationality or language.
The first centenary celebration of this library was solemnized on 12 November 1964 in the presence of the Honorable Prime Minister of India, Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Ji. From the very inception, several celebrities from India and abroad have visited this library and placed on record their deep sense of appreciation about magnificent collection and surroundings. The father of library science Dr S R Ranganathan also visited the library in November 1944. Many citizens who became great name in India and even in the world have been among the borrowers of this library.
The public library is working under the administrative control of the Department of Higher Education, Government of Uttar Pradesh. The Honorable Governor of Uttar Pradesh has constituted a ten-member management committee for effective management of this library. Commissioner of Prayagraj Division is the Chairman of this committee and Librarian is the member/secretary of this committee.
